BEER SHORTAGE
CAUGUS ACTION POSSIBLE RELEASE FROM TIED-HOUSE SYSTEM (Rec. 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 11. Developments in the beer shqrtag* situation include a, strong move by caucus to release the liquor tirade from the present tied-house system. A member of the committee of 19 appointed' to examine the Liquor Amendment Bill said he would oress for an amendment to compel breweries to sell all tied houses in a reasonable time, and at a fair valuation. He added that the first essential in the Liquor Amendment. Bill was to free the trade from the octopus-like grip of breweries. Fewer than 5 per cent, of the 2,036 New South Wales hotels are free, the remaining premises being the property of breweries. Direct action by ' the Australian Railways Union, Road Transport Union," and the Liquor Trades' Union will be proposed at a meeting in Sydney this week. The delegates will be. invited to endorse the suggestion that those unions should refuse the transport of beer to country and metropolitan hotels if the beer situation doea not improve from a given date.
