NOTES ON THE RACING

For the Trial Handicap, Patmos (1.104-631) was made a hot favourite, Vith Kassai (421-614) and Norse Lass (331-534) the best backed of the others. From an even start, Victory Flight was the first to show, and at the end of a furlong was two lengths clear of Kassai and Norse Lass. At th far turn the latter had taken charge,'and led into the straight from Victory Flight, Sir Garnish, Patmos, and Kassai. Patmos ran past the leaders halfway Sown the straight, and won nicely by two lengths from Sir Garnish, who beat Kassai by a neck. Norse Lass and Victory Flight were close up nest. In a sis-horse field for the Gore High-weight Handicap, Brockie (922765) and Irish Pal (879-761) were the only starters" solidly backed. Sailor's Pal led Irish Pal out of the straight, the latter falling on the turn. As they raced along the back. Sailor's Pal was showing the way to Brockie and Maharajah, who were racing together. There was no change in the order until turn-

ing for home, where Brockie issued Jus challenge. He and Sailor's Pal drew right away from the others, Sailor's Pal holding his advautage to win by half a length. Young Monanui was eight lengths away third, with Maharajah next. Loyal Boy (1,048-910) was made a pronounced favourite for the Knapdale Trot, with Mistydale (693-803) and Maori Home (437-510) next in demand, and they filled the places, but in the reverse order to their backing. Mistydale began the best of those on the limit, and led through the straight from Maori Home, Sandpiper, and Royal Gamble. This order was not changed, and they turned for home in that order. Maori Home challenged Mistydale in the straight, and the latter, skipping about 100 yards from the post, Maori Home beat her by two lengths. Loyal Boy was 10 lengths away third, and Royal Gamble next. Bonnie Dale, Strathdon, and St. Phils lost their chances at the start.

On his second to Foxhaven the previous Satnrday, Royal Chance (1,348959) was sent out a short-priced favourite, with Royal Lancer (884-762) and Silver Mask (447-598) next fancied. From an excellent despatch Good Cast led Royal Chance and Royal Lancer through the straight. As they raced along the back, Te Anau Lady displaced Royal Lancer in third place. Good Cast led Royal Chance and Te Anau Lady round the top and into the straight. Royal Chance threw out a challenge at the distance, but Good Cast easily held him off, and beat him home by, two lengths. Royal Lancer was a length and a-half away third, and Silver (Mask just headed Te Anau Lady for fourth place. Merry Lancer (851-860) and Snnny Course (795-761) were the best backed horses in the Mandeville Hack Handicap, with Starlee (712-783) next in demand. Divorced and (Runaway were the smartest out, but at the end of a furlong the latter got knocked back to last place. Starlee took charge at the half-mile post, and led Divorced, Merry Lancer, and Sea Power round the far turn. Starlee was joined by the favourite on the home turn, with Divorced and Kai Pai handy. Merry Lancer headed Starlee when in line for home, and looked a winner until his stab'ie-mate Divorced go through next the rails, and beat Merry Lancer half a length. Kai Pai was a length away third, with Starlee and Sea Power next.

For the Croydon Handicap Bonny Flight (1,615-974) made a shortpriced favourite, with Lyndall (878-928) and Fleet Street (414-631) next fancied. When the fieldi settled down Ring Chief was in charge, and at the end of two furlongs was racing clear of Gamble, Fleet Street, and the favourite. Racing across the top, Ring Chief was still clear of Fleet Street, and this pair were followed into the straight by Bonny Flight, Gamble, Lyndall, and Green Note. Ring Chief compounded halfway down the straight, and Fleet Street won by two lengths from Lyndall, who finished very fast and heat Gamble by half a length. Sing Sing and Bonny Flight were next. In very even betting pools on the second division of the Knapdale Harness Handicap the best fancied were Desert Flight (610-545), Sand Maid (589-629), Coudray (577-576), and Town Talk (458-485). Grattan Lee, Locksley Hall, and Desert Flight were very' smartly out of the barrier, but the last named brokedi at the end of two furlongs. Grattan Lee and Locksley Hall led Coudray, Sporting Edition, and Sterling Hall passing the stand, and there was no change until about half a mile from home, where Coudray ran to the front. Sterling Hall followed Coudray into the straight, but could make no impression on him, Coudray winning by six lengths. Oporo was eight lengths away third, and Desert Flight and Sporting Edition were next. Loyal Hand, Oporo, Town Talk, Tolan, and Sand Maid were slow to begin. In pools totalling £4,870 on the Eastern Hack Handicap, Prize Ring (1,8611.084) was made a good favourite, with Wild Cry'(l,l69-911) and Fuzzy Wuzzy 1.114-905) next fancied. Though slow to jump out, Wild Cry quickly made up the lost ground, and joined Sumra as they tourned out of the straight, and this pair quickly drew out about six lengths clear. -Approaching the far turn, the favourite began to bridge the gap, and halfway across the top he joined these leaders.,, Prize Ring was first into the straight, and beat Sumra home by two lengths. Fuzzy Wuzzy was a length away third, and Red Prize next.
