CAPTURED JAP. ISLANDS

RETENTION BY AMERICA WASHINGTON, January 23. The United Nations Charter adequately protected United States interests in strategic Pacific Islands captured from Japan, said the UnderSecretray of State, Mr Dean Acheson. He emphasised that the failure of the Security Council to ratify the individual trusteeship agreement for such Pacific Islands would not affect the United States' continued possession of those islands. Mr Acheson, however, refused to speculate how the rest of the world might react to the United States retention of the islands. on a unilateral basis should the Security Council reject trusteeship by the United States.
