JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

OTAGO SUCCESSES (I\A.) CM RISTCiiUROM., Jan. 23. The first day’s play in tne x\ew Zealand junior lawn tennis championships at Wilding Park to-day saw the lields in the singles events reduced to 1(5 each, but two stoppages on account of rain prevented the hoped-for progress with the doubles events, and it will now be no easy matter to complete the tournament in the scheduled four days. The largest entry yet received for the tournament includes players from Auckland to Otago, and a very high standard of play was seen, not only in the matches played by the several juniors who have proved themselves in open competition, but in a surprisingly large number of matches played by the less noted players. The strongest visiting contingent is from Auckland. They include the holders of three of the five titles —J. A. Barry, _ boys’ singles and mixed doubles; Miss H. Redwood, girls’ and mixed doubles.; and Miss V. G. Johnson, girls’ doubles. Both the Wellington and Hutt Valley Associations have sent strong teams, and the showing. of the eight players from Otago confirms the impression that this province will soon be a force in the game in the. Dominion. From the smaller provincial associations there is a fair representation, Waikato, Wanganui, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, and South Canterbury all having sent some promising youngsters. As usual, the home province has the largest number of competitors, including one titleholder, Miss Jean .MacGibbon.

Barry is regarded as certain, barring accidents, to retain his singles title. O. M. Ellis, a stocky, hard-hitting Otago boy, played very well in beating G.' ! L. Johns (Auckland). The . girls' singles entry includes several girls who, on their 'form to-day, appear capable of extending the present titleholder, Miss J. Mac Gibbon. Miss Valerie Johnson, the Auckland junior champion, Miss A. M. Tinnock, and Miss.D. I. Bosher (Wanganui) are all good players who have survived to the last eight in this half of the draw! Two competitors in the other half who appeared outstanding were Miss H. Redwood (Auckland) and Miss M. M. Robertson (Otago). Results: — BOYS' SINGLES. —First Round.— J. R.
