MINE MAN POWER
A LOW LEVEL . CONDITIONS MUST BE IMPROVED (Rec. 10.55 a.m.) LONDON, December 30. Pointing out that man power for the mines has reached the lowest level, the president of the National Union of Mine Workers, Mr Will Lawther, has set out ideas to make mining more attractive. He said the new Coal Commission should plan: First, wages equal to those in other important industries ; second, a guaranteed five-day week; third, two weeks’ holiday with pay; fourth, more nourishing food and a more effective medical service; fifth, an entirely new attitude toward the young- miners, who must-; be made to feel that they are tlie most- important of the nation's citizens, and that to be a miner is to follow an honoured occupation.
