CONTROL OF JAPAN
MACARTHUR OPPOSED TO NEW PLAN WILL TRY TO MAKE IT WORK (Rec’. 11 a.m.) TOKIO, Dec. 30. Revealing that two months ago lie recorded disagreement with the proposal for a Four Power Control for Japan, and that he now disclaimed responsibility for the Moscow decision, General MacArthur said that, nevertheless, he would endeavour to make the plan work. General MacArthur added that since he objected to the Washington plan he had not been consulted. “ Whatever merit or demerit the plan possesses it is my firm intent, within the authority entrusted to me, to try and make it work. The issues involved are too vital for the world’s future to have them bog down.” General MacArthur’s statement followed an announcement by a Far Eastern Advisory Commission Press officer in Washington that throughout the Allied discussions the general was kept fully informed of the plan and he did not object to it.
