NEW FUTURE AHEAD
JAPAN’S PAST ELIMINATED , SMOOTH TRANSITION EFFECTED TOKIO, December 28. The last evil rents of the Tenno Svstem (Imperial System) hare been eliminated, and the abuses which led Japan into war _ may be- expected to pass out of existence, said General MacArthur. Outlining the steps taken since the occupation, he claimed that the mass of the Japanese people favour his occupation measures and want to get along in a new life. He added that to have tossed all the required changes which were so revolutionary into the lap of the Government simultaneously would have caused such utter confusion and chaos that the benefit never could have been achieved. It was during this formulative period that outsiders thought the ; peace was being made too soft for the Japanese. Headquarters officers insisted that the reference to the Tenno System did not mean that General MacArthur was reflecting on Emperor Hirohito. but only the system. Correspondents say that the reference may even read as a hint that the Allies would not be too perturbed if Hirohito vanished altogether.
