The attendance was promising, and the totalisator investments on the first race amounted to £4,623, compared with £2,508 last year. The track was iheavy after the recent persistent rain.

At the far turn Leading Man took the lead and two furlongs from home Merry Lancer came to the front to lead into the straight from Flourescent, Nor'wester, and Patmos, with Brockie coming fast on the outer. Brockie challenged hard, but could not make it and Merry Lancer won by a neck. Patmos was half a length back third, and Alamode two lengths away fourth, followed by Nor'wester, Speedy, Espadrille, and Tenor Royal. Merry Lancer, who paid a win dividend of nearly a quarter of a century, carried £215. Brockie carried £999 and Patmos £754. Time, 1.33.

Peter Gazelle led into the straight from Don't Regret, and Sunny Course, and went on to win by a neck from Joy Rosa, who challenged strongly. Salad was four lengths back, a neck in front of Siegform. Then came Sumra, Gold Spur, and Sunny Course. Time, 1.31 2-5. Peter Gazelle carried £1,308, Joy Rosa £1,325, and Salad £1,243.
