Western Front took the lead at the start and was not seriously challenged until the last furlong. Triumphal, Linloeh, Te Anau Lady, Bonnie Chela, and Siegform were his earlv attendants, but Triumphal faded and Western Front led Te Anau Lady, Bonnie Chela, and Siegform into the straight. Western Front staved off a strong challenge by Te Anau Lady, and won by a head, with Siegform two lengths back. Thorn bridge was close up fourth, and was followed by Red Prize. Fuzzy Wuzzy, .Linloeh, and Bonnie Chela. Three furlongs from home Gold Lance got on to the heels of the horse ahead of him. Chain went over on top of him. broke his leg, and was destroyed.
