FINAL OBSEQUIES
GREAT GATHERING IN OLD HEIDELBERG (Rec. 12.45 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 23. High-ranking soldiers who fought across Europe with General Patton crowded into old Heidelberg to-day to pay their last respects to their leader. The Episcopal funeral service was held in Heidelberg’s Christ Church. After the service 6,000 American soldiers and German civilians lined the route of the cortege on its way to the special train for Luxembourg. The soldiers were clearly grieved, says the Associated Press correspondent, while the Germans watched with stony stares. An 80-piece band led the cortege through lines of helmeted and armed guards, spaced every 20 feet. The United States army provided a special train for Mrs Patton. _ Senior American officers present included General MacNarney and a large number of Allied representatives. The pallbearers from the church were six soldiers, including Master-sergeant William Meelks, a negro, who was Pation’s orderly for eight years. The funeral is expected to be held at Hamm to-morrow morning.
