There will be no publication of the ' Star ' on Tuesday-Christmas Day. 'E.A.N.' sends £1 for the Relief Work in Greece Fund. The city organist, Dr V. E. Galway, will give an after-church recital in the Town Hall to-morrow night, when the following programme, which is entirely devoted to organ music appropriate to the Christmas season, will _be presented :—Fantasia on ' Veni Immanuel' (Harris); Shepherd's Music ('Christmas Oratorio,' Bach); Rhapsody on two Carols ; Pastoral Symphony (Messiah,' Handel); ' March of the Wise Men ' (Dubois); 'Offertoire Sur Deux Noels' (Guilmant): Christmas Eve Pastoral (Merkel); March on a Theme of Handel (Guilmant); ' Lift Up Your Heads, O Ye Gates.' Dr Galway will be assisted by Miss Elisabeth Galway. who will sing the following carols:—' The Three Mummers ' (Head); 'ln Dulci Jubilo '; 'Sleep, Holy Babe'; 'The Holly and the Ivy '; and ' jubilate ' (traditional). There will he no charge for admission. Money is now being collected to establish a scholajship fund to commenorate the deeds of Captain C. H. Upham, V.C. and bar. The scholarship will be available to the sons or male descendants of men and women of Canterbury who served in the armed forces during the war of 193945. The scholarships will be tenable at the Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, or the Canterbury University College. The idea is to help the sons of deceased or disabled servicemen or servicewomen who may be prevented by financial circumstances from continuing with their post-sec-ondary education, The annual value will be £IOO. It is hoped to raiso a fund sufficient to provide a number of scholarships each year. The necessity for safe-guarding access to hot pools in the native villages olf Rotorua was stressed by the coroner, Mr W. L. Richards, at the inquest into the death of Elaine Mitchell, aged three, who died in hospital following a fall into a pool at Ohinemutu (says the ' New Zealand Herald '). Mr Richards said it was gratifying to know that that pool had been immediately barricaded. An urgent necessity still existed,_ however, for a survey of those areas in the pas, so that barriers could be set up to prevent similar tragedies in future. The test music for the brass bands' contest to be held at Christchurch from March 17 to 23 next was announced in Wellington yesterday. The test pieces are—A Grade: 'An Epic Symphony,' by Percy Fletcher, and ' Joan of Arc,' by Denis Wright. B Grade: ' L'Arlesienne,' suite, by Bizet. A special prize was awarded to the Mataura School this year by the University of Otago. This was the museum prize, which was awarded to.the boys who had collected the largest number of blackbirds for the university. The blackbirds were used during the year for experimental purposes. A report from the museum on the birds stated that Mataura birds were notable for the deep orange colour of their beaks. All beaks of the birds sent in were kept, and the unusual one skinned. • The museum prizes were awarded to Masters Lex Folster and Allan Glover. After being in operation for four years, the Gore linen flax factory ceased work on Thursday afternoon. The factory has been officially closedby the Department of Internal Affairs, but the building will be taken over by the Department of Scientific and Industrial (Research for use as a plant research station; Straw remaining on hand will be transferred to the Winton factory for processing. The establishment had a staff of about 40 hands a few of whom will join the staff olf the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Some others will be retained at the factory for the purpose of dismantling essential plant, the others being laid off now that the war emergency is over. When the books of the Dunedin Returned Services' Association closed yesterday for the year the membership figure had reached 7,992, this number including 4.680 ex-servicemen of the war just ended. The City Fire Brigade was called out at 1.25 this afternoon by an automatic false alarm from the tram sheds.
