OBITUARY
, MR Rj ,W. GIBBS^vThe death is reported at Wellington of Air Richard Waine Gibbs, a former chairman of directors of the Bank qf New Zealand,/and a director of several national"/business concerns. He entered the bank;as a cadet in 1877 at Nelson, and served with the institution in various capacities almost until the time of his death.
Born in London in 1860, he was educated at the Kensington. Grammar School. For many years he was accountant at the head office of the bank, and, before being appointed manager at Tim aru, and later Dunedin, was a branch inspector for seven years. Be*
tween 1919 and 1924 Mr Gibbs was the chief auditor, and on his retirement in 1924 lie was elected to the board of directors, on which he served as chairman in . 1939. He played a major part in introducing the superannuation scheme for staff members. Mr Gibbs was also a director of th® Gear Meat Company, and the Wellington Trust and Loan Company. * He married Miss F. Raine, of Melbourne, who pre-deceased him, and he leaves three daughters—Mrs H. D. Skinner and Mrs G. S. M.Batham, of Dunedin, and Mrs Justice Smith, of Wellington. The. flag was flown at half-mast on the bank’s buildings to-day' as a mark of respect.
