SHOPPING HOURS
BUSY TRADING TO-DAY Of the retailers, . butchers are the only ones who begin their Christmas holidays after to-day’6 trading. All other retailers will be open for business as usual to-morrow morning and again on Monday. Because Christmas Day falls early in the week there will be two virtual shopping Christmas Eves in the city, to-night and again on Monday. Many of the retailers will be remaining open until 10 o’clock on Monday evening. The demand for meat in city shops was very heavy this morning because butchers were selling meat which householders hope will last them for five days. The butchers’ shops will be open until 9 o’clock this evening. Some of the suburban butchers have announced that they will be open for business tomorrow morning if they can obtain supplies of meat. Most of the retail shops will reopen for business next Thursday. Several of the large drapery establishments, and some of the furniture firms have decided to close Ifor about a fortnight, but all provision shops will be resuming business for three days between Christmas and New Year. -Some city factories closed for the holidays when work finished last evening, and others will close down to-day, reopening after the New Year, when the employees have bad tbeir fortnight’s annual holiday together with the statutory holidays.
