MANY “DEFERRED” ITEMS

HINT OF GOVERNMENT POLICY (Special.) WELLINGTON. Nov. 6. The most significant indication of Government policy in relation to controlled imports is the recurrence in the import schedules of the word “ deferred ” where it relates to a large number of important items obtainable from' Canada and th.o United' States. The- Minister of Finance omitted to malke any explanations when publishing the import schedules. He probably regarded the matter as having a delicate diplomatic aspect about which- nothing definite should be said until Britain and the United States complete an agreement on financial and tTade matters.

As an example of how the import schedule is framed, the items relating to agricultural implements and parts show the policy. The quota mentioned for the United Kingdom and Australia is 100 per cent, of the 1945 importations, but Canada and the United States are in the deferred category. Motor vehicles, unassembled, or .the completely knodked-down commercial vehicle chassis, are marked “ U.K.. 100 per cent, of 1938, other countries deferred.”

The entry regarding motor cars is “ U.K., 75 per cent, of 1938 imports of assembled and unassembled cars; other countries deferred.”
