SECOND-HAND CARS
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —I was very pleased to see the letter in Saturday’s ‘Star’ by “Overhead ” enlightening purchasers of used cars, on the innumerable pitfalls open. The motoring public want more than the rubber. They want' goodtyres to run on: not a good tread, with the side walls gone, and as often as not a spare with plenty of rubber, but tone at the bead, hanging on the car at,: the dealer possibly afraid to inflate it, as the tyre would probably blow, off the rim. I have seen this on more than one occasion, and can speak to my persona] sorrow. I am afraid “Overhead” was well astray if he took out a 1928 mode! used car at £245 on trial, unless'-.it was a Rolls 1 'Royce. As •to . pxpecting the testing staff to take off all the tyres and inspect them, the suggestion is ridiculous; but I have on ‘ many occasion* heard the inspectors draw an owner’* attention to a doubtful tyre. I think the onus is on the owner of the car to see that his tyres are in a safe state to be on the road. —I am, etc.. Observer. November 5.
