SHOOTING OF SURVIVORS
U-BOAT GREW FOUND GUILTY HAMBURG, October 20. All five accused in the U-boat trial were found guilty. Eck, a lieutenant Auguste Hoffmann, a naval surgeon, and Walter Pfenning, were sentenced to death by shooting.® Lenz was. sentenced to life imprisonment, and Lead-ing-seaman Schwender to 15 years’ imprisonment. • [ ll Operational necessity ” was the reason for the shooting and blowing up of swimming survivors of the torpedoed Peleus, said the German counsel, opening the case on behalf of Captain Heinz Eck, who was accused, with four other members of a U-obat crew, before a military tribunal. Counsel, Dr Todsen, said accused acted not out of cruelty, but to eliminate all traces of the submarine’s operations—a necessary task in view of the special and difficult circumstances under which U-boats were then operating.]
