W.A.A.G.S KILLED IN AIR GRASH

A simple, but moving, “in memoriam ” service for the three members of the New Zealand Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, Sergeant Marie E. I. Innes, Private Margery Greenfield (Dunedin), and Private Margaret J. Mortlock, who were killed on active service over France, was held on Thursday morning at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Wellington. A hundred and thirty W.A.A.C.’s filled one-half of the cathedral. Four W.A.A.C. ushers escorted relatives and friends, Army personnel, Red Cross and St. John officials j and a contingent of W.A.A.F.’s ‘ and W.R.E.N.’s to their seats. The Rev. N. E. Winhall, vicar of Upper Hutt, conducted the service. Her Excellency, Lady Newall, honorary commandant-in-chief of the corps, accompanied by Miss N. Walton _ and Mrs Y. Jowett, chief commander N.Z. W.A.A.C., attended. Others present included the Minister of Defence, Hon. F. Jones, Mr F. B. Dwyer, Army secretary, Brigadier A. E. Conway, adju-tant-general, the mayoress, Mrs Appleton, Miss R. Herrick, WJt.E.N.s, Wing-officer E. N. Carlyon, W-A.A.r., Mesdames Knox Gilmer and M. J. Bentlev, and Miss Amy Kane, W.W.S.A., Miss I. Willis, 0.8. R., A.R.R.C., matron-in-chief, N.Z. Army Nursing Service, and Matrons E. JU. Lewis and M. Hitchcock. _ The Trentham Camp Military Band, at the rear of the cathedral, played Chopin’s funeral march, and the sounding of the Last Post and Reveille concluded the service.
