INTOXICATED MOTOR CYCLIST

INCIDENT IN GEORGE STREET Accosted by Sergeant Spencer and a constable when lie was attempting to start his motor cycle in George street on Saturday evening, Robert Anderson Miller, aged 27, a grocer’s assistant, was found to be in an intoxicated condition. He pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared in the Police Court to-day, and was fined £7 10s by Messrs A. J. Haub and J. I. Himburg, justices of the peace. In addition. Miller’s license to ride a motor cycle was cancelled for a year, this penalty not disqualifying him from obtaining a license to drive a motor vehicle. Sergeant O’Carroll said the motor cycle "had bepen parked in George street, near the European Hotel, and Miller was noticed by the police endeavouring to coast the machine down the incline’in order to start the engine. The defendant was certified at the police station by Dr E. R. Harty as being in an intoxicated condition. The sergeant described Miller as a peison of good character, who had not, been in trouble before, and for that reason the police did not press for a heavy penalty. Sergeant O’Carroll said that such cases were regarded seriously, but the police did not regard this particular one as meriting severe punishment. Miller had served overseas with the Air Force for two vears. Before the penalty was announced, the defendant made an application for tlio retention of his license 1 to drive a grocer’s truck. THEFT ALLEGED.

Alexander Kerr, aged 30, a motor driver, was charged with the theft yesterday of £lO, the property of Arthur Henderson Childs, and on the application of Sergeant o’Carroll, was remanded until to-morrow.
