WHIPPET RACING

COMBINED MEETING The combined meeting of the Dunedin and Fernhill Whippet (Racing Clubs, which opened at Tahuna on Saturday, attracted the entry of all tho leading dogs in Otago as well as a number from Canterbury and Wellington. The principal event, the Happy Days Cup, was won by the locally-owned* Dainty Star, who, although only 18 months old, }ias an attractive record of successes on various tracks in the Dominion. In Saturday’s race Dainty Star was beaten into second place by Bambi in their heat, but in the final took the lead with half the distance covered, and won well from the Wellington dog, Gremlin, and Bambi. Dainty Star also won the second heat of the free-for-all, beating such good visiting dogs as Moneyspider, Te Hero, and Nizam, but failed to gain a place in the final, which was won by Victory March from the consistent Bambi.

One of the most spectacular performances of the afternoon was that of Smartie, ivho, conceding what looked to be impossible starts, Avon the Middle-Aveight Cup in the last stride., Smartie also Avon the open hurdles, but he Avas extremely lucky, as the Christchurch dog, Presentation, spreadeagled the field, but stopped a yard from the finishing line to see what had happened to the remainder of the competitors, and Avas beaten before he Avas able to get going again. . The meeting Avas concluded this afternoon on the Fernhill Club’s course at Abbotsford.

The folloAving Avere the results: — Amalgamated Flat Handicap, of 150 Yards. —Mrs J. Fitzgerald’s Joe Cann (9yds) 1, Lady Jinks (11yds) 2, Stony Broke (11yds) 3. Won by half a length, one length betAveen second and third. Noble Runt finished first, but was disqualified. Happy Days Cup, of 150 Yards.—Mr A. Wilkes’s Dainty Star (9Jyds) 1, Gremlin (9yds) 2, Bambi (Byds) 3. Won hv half a length, same distance betAveen second and third.

St. Clair Flat Handicap, of 150 Yards. —Mr W. H. Tinuns’s Jeweller (9yds) 1. Betswin (10£yds) 2, Postman (9j-yds) 3. Won by a length, half' a length betAveen second and third. Presentation Avas first past the post, but Avas disqualified. Otago Free-for-All, of 150 Yards (all scr). —Mr J. Fitzpatrick’s Victory March 1, Bambi 2, Gremlin 3. Won by a length, half a length betAveen second and third.
