ITALY'S RECONSTRUCTION

PURCHASE OF SURPLUS WAR MATERIAL LONDON, October 19. To aid s Italy in her reconstruction, American surplus war material ‘is to be sold to her on a large scale, says the Rome correspondent of ‘ The Times.’ The first contract was signed yesterday, under which the Italian Government will receive machinery, medicines, radio material, timber, and other goods valued at 300,000,000 lira.;

“ This contract,” said an American representative. Colonel Caulkins, “ represents barely 2J per cent, of the total quantity of surplus merchandise that will be supplied. The next offer will consist of locomotives, raliway wagons, and rails, valued at 1,600.000.000 lira. Payment will be made in Italian currency by arrangement between the American Treasury and the Italian Government.
