REACTIONS TO INDICTMENT STREICHER DOES NOT WANT JEWISH LAWYER LONDON, October 19. The trials of the war criminals will begin at Nuremberg on November 20. The American Associated Press correspondent at Nuremberg describes some of the reactions of the accused when thcv were handed the indictment.

Hitler’s economic adviser, Funk, broke down and cried like a baby. “ 1 would like some officer appointed bv the court to discuss my defence,” he said.

Jew-baiter Streicher asked immediately when he could arrange about counsel. He was handed a list, including several with Jewish names. He said: “I could not ask a Jew to defend me.” The former chief of stall of the YVehrmacht, Field-Marshal Jodi, asked if he should choose a criminlal lawyer or an international lawyer, and was told any lawyer would be acceptable. Admiral Doenitz was apparently prepared for the indictment, because he had ready a slip of paper witlj the names of the two lawyers he wanted to defend him.

Von Ribbentrop said he wanted to think the matter over before saying anything. The former .ruler of occupied Poland, Hans Frank, when told he had a chance to see counsel, burst into tears as he shouted: “ 1 am trying to preserve my health. I have the greatest interest in the conclusion, of this tri:»l.” The Berlin correspondent of the ‘ Daily Express ’ reports that no indictments were served on Admiral Raeder or the former chief editor of the German News Agency, Friteche, because both are said to be in Russian hands. The Russians, however, have undertaken to serve them with the papers and deliver the men before the trials begin.
