PUBLIC MONUMENTS

SCRUBBING AND GLEANING Public monuments, in Dunedin are to be scrubbed and cleaned, the City Council having accepted the quotation of Messrs H. S. Bingham and Co. of £2B to carry out the work. A further quotation of £24 for_ cutting back the stone and re-lettering Dr Burns's memorial in the Octagon has also been accepted. The following eight memorials will be cleaned:—Robert Burns, in the Ortiisron; Dr Burns, in the Octagon; Dr Stuart, lower High street; Queen \ ictona, Macaiidrew, and war memorial, in the Queen's Gardens; South African memorial, at the Oval; and Cargill's monument, in Custom-house Square. In the case of the war memorial and the Chapman memorial to Dr. Burns in the Octagon, cleaning will be carried' out to a reasonable height only.
