NATIONAL PARTY

MR NORMAN JONES ENTERTAINED “ When the candidate for the Dunedin North by-election was first announced, there were amongst our supporters some who were very doubtful about the choice of the selection committee,” said Mr E. J. Smith, chairman of the Otago-Southland division of the National Party of New Zealand last night. “ However, as meeting succeeded meeting it became evident that we had found the very best man obtainable.” Mr Smith emphasised the splendid results obtained by Mr Jones in the very difficult contest. In what was admittedly a Labour stronghold, he had very substantially lowered' an impressive majority, and it was Mr Smith’s belief that Mr Jones would soon he the parliamentary representative of Dunedin North.

The occasion was a complimentary social and dance rendered to Mr Norman Jones by the Dunedin North electorate Committee of the National Party. The chairman, Mr W. Gray Henderson, introduced the speaker, and Mr Jones briefly responded'. The evening throughout was thoroughly enjoyable, about 500 attending. Musical items were of a very high standard, those contributing being Mrs W. Hall Masters, Miss C. Rouse, Miss Shirley Le Gal, Mi ,R. D. Stewart, Mrs C. \V. Briggs, Mr Walter Prictor, and Mr M. G. Double. The accompanist was Miss E. M. Steadman.
