CITY RESERVES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As one whose grandparents arrived in the John Wickliffe, I should like to; register an emphatic protest against Cr McMillan’s suggestion that the garden plot in front of the Railway Station be converted into a motor parking area, and that women’s rest rooms be erected in the Queen’s Gardens. Proud of Dunedin ” is not the only person who resents the suggestion that our beautiful city reserves be encroached upon because of their convenience. When forgoing the revenue which they could have obtained or the rates they might have saved because of the setting aside of these reserves and the upkeep of same, our early settlers realised that they were doing something for posterity. They were planning a town which was later to become a city, and they wanted it to be something of which future generations could be proud. Apparently there are some in our midst who do not appreciate their actions, but let us hope that they are in a minority, and that they will never have their way.—l am, etc., Members Otago Early Settlers' October 18. Association.
