Mr and Mrs Andersen Tyrer left for Invercargill to-day. Wing-commander R. G. Brickell, of Dunedin, who has been abroad for the last nine and a-half years, returned to New Zealand yesterday with his wife and daughter, arriving in Auckland from India by the Glenogle. Miss Mary E. Paul has been appointed to the position of physical education specialist and sports mistress at the Otago Girl’s High. School. Miss Paul, who will take up her duties at the beginning of next year, is at present oii'-the staff of Nelson Girl’s College. ■ : Private advice has been received, by * Mrs F. Irvine; of/ Caversham; that her son, Flight-lieutenant W. M. Irvine, is oh the Andes, which is expected at Lyttelton on Tuesday. Flight-lieutenant Irvine, who has been overseas for three and a-half years, served as navigator with a Mosquito squadron. Prior to enlisting he was on the clerical staff of the New Zealand/Railways. Mr C. R. Mentiplay has been apSointed special' Australian correspouent of the' New 'Zealand Press Association. Prior to the ■ war Mr Mentiplay'/was on the staff of the ‘ Evening Post,’ Wellington. After serving two years with the Sixth Field Regiment in North' Africa he was appointed an official New Zealand war correspondent and served in that capacity up to the time of the capitulation of Germany. The Anglican Diocesap. .Synod at its final session yesterday recorded its profound appreciation of the noble , and self-sacrificing labours of the late Mr •T. S. Gerrard as manager of the Anglican Home and decided to: convey to Mrs Gerrard its sympathy in her bereavement, together with an assurance of its heartfelt thanks for the share she had 1 taken in the management of the homes over many years. The appointment of Mr R. J. Paul as medical supplies controller was announced yesterday by the Minister of Health, Mr Nordmeyer. who said the Government intended to remove the controls at the earliest opportunity, hut it was inadvisable at this juncture to dispense with the control of medical supplies. The Minister said that Mr Paul had been closely connected with this activity since the outbreak of war under the administration of the Direc-tor-General of Health, Dr M. H. Watt, When Japan entered ,ijhe war Mr Paul’s services were Used in the establishment of. the . medical . supplies section. Mr Paul is a son of Mr J; T. Paul, formerly of Dunedin, and until recently director of publicity. The death has occurred of Mr B. S. Knox, town clerk of Lower Hutt, after a long illness. He held the position for nearly 20 years. A Navy casualty list records as missing Leading-seaman Raymond Arthur Downes, whose wife is Mrs A. A. Downes, of Dunedin. A Press Association cable message from London states that Lieutenantcommissioner John S. Bladin, at present Salvation Army territorial commissioner in Britain, has been appointed director of the organisations of the Red Shield services. Commissioner Bladin, who served in many Salvation Army posts in New Zealand and .Australia, will take over the responsibility for this vast organisation,- which operates in every country where British soldiers are stationed. The award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to two Auckland airmen for “ the utmost courage, and devotion to duty on numerous missions against the enemy ” is announced in advice received by the Air Department. The recipients are Acting Flight-lieu-tenants Roland Stanley Bishop and Richard Bruce Bolt. The next of kin respectively are Mrs G. Bishop, of Auckland (mother) and Wing-com-mander G. B. Bolt, of Auckland. The selection of three lecturers to fill appointments on the teaching staff of the Auckland University College has been announced by the College Council. They are as follows:—Senior lecturer in radio physics. Dr Kurt S. Kreielsheimer, now of Auckland; lecturer' in English, Mr Michael K. Joseph, of Auckland; lecturer in education, Mr William B. Hare, of Auckland. . The appointment of Mr K. B. Cumberland, of Christohurch, Tas lecturer in charge of geography was announced earlier this week. Dr Kreielsheimer, who deft Germany when the Nazi persecution of non-Aryana began, has been in Auckland sinca 1934 except for four years spent in Australia.

Mr G. D. Hyde, N.D.H. (N.Z.), Cocikayne Gold Medallist for 1944, has joined the staff of Massey Agricultural College, and will have charge of the propagating and nursery section. He was formerly employed by the Hutt City Council, and was trained, at. the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. He served overseas with the Air Force. "With Mr Hyde’s arrival, three of the five persons to whom .the Cockayne Gold Medal has been awarded in the past are. now on the Massey College staff, the other two being Mr F. J. E. Jollie, N.D.H. (N.Z.). and Miss K. M. O’Brien, N.D.H. (N.Z.).
