DUMPED POTATOES

SUBURBAN RESIDENTS' WINDFALL

" LARGE QUANTITIES EDIBLE

(P.A.): AUCKLAND,iOctober 19. The dumping of a large quantity of Tasmanian potatoes at the City Council’s rubbish tip at Westmere has resulted in a windfall for residents of nearby suburbs. While many of the potatoes fall into the “ unfit for human consumption ’’ category defined by the United States Purchasing Board (under whose orders the potatoes were dumped), many more have been found edible, and the result is that not a few Aucklanders are assured of potato supplies for months to come. All this week potatoes have been carted away from the tip, not only in small quantities, but also in wheelbarrow loads and truck loads. Before a bulldozer was put to work yesterday spreading and crushing the potatoes, visitors to the tip had merely to select a bag and take it away. The quantity of potatoes dumped is not revealed, but is estimated to run into thousands of 1401 b hags.
