MOUNTING COSTS
BRITAIN'S TEMPORARY HOUSING SHORTAGE LONDON, October 16. A White Paper issued on the eve of the House of Commons housing debate explains that the cost of the temporary housing programme, originally estimated at £150,000,000, has risen to over £184,000,000 in 12 months. Every type of temporary prefabricated dwelling has become progressively more exDensive. The first figure mentioned for an aluminium house was £9OO, but the ■figure has risen to £1,365. Thirty thousand temporary houses from America under lend-lease were expected to cost £BOO each, including £2lO Customs duty, but the price rose to £1.330 when lend-lease ended. It was thou decided to take only 8,150 houses.
