THE SHOPS
CLOSING PERIODS ESSENTIAL SERVICES MAINTAINED Shops in Dunedin will follow the procedure for the celebration of the victory outlined by the Prime Minister. Essential services are retaining sufficient staffs to carry on over the period, and provision has been made for the maintenance of electricity and gas supplies. The trams will run only a .skeleton service for an,hour and a-half before and after the procession. At the request of the Prime Minister hotels throughout New Zealand will close to-morrow between 10.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. The arrangement for chemists’ shops was for them to remain open for two hours after the declaration was made, and then close for the remainder of
the day. They will also remain closed for the whole of to-morrow. Urgent prescriptions will fie attended to by the All-Night Pharmacy, which will observe Sunday hours. THE RAILWAYS. In order that as many of the railway staff as possible could be free to take part in the celebrations train services were cut to a minimum.. To-morrow tho through expresses will run in both directions, while as far.as the suburban services are concerned trains Will leave .Dunedin for Mosgiel at 7.13 a.m. and 5.15 p.m., and trains will run from Mosgiel to Dunedin at 8.11 a.m. and 6.15 p.m. On the Port Chalmers line trains will leave Dunedin at 8.15 a.m. and 5.15 p.m., while trains for Dunedin will leave the -port at 8.13 a.m. and 5.10 p.m. BREAD TO-MORROW. The bakers have agreed to bake to-" night, and shops will bC open to-morrow morning for two hours for the sale of bread. Otherwise they will observe the same holidays as the other shops. BUTCHERS CLOSED TILL FRIDAY. The butchers’ shops in the city and suburbs closed shortly after midday, and will remain so until Friday morning.
