COMBATING SMALLPOX

NEW USE FOR PENICILLIN SUCCESSFUL CASE Hi GLASSOW (Rec. 10 a.m.) RUGBY, June 28. . The success of penicillin in combating smallpox is disclosed in the 'British Medical Journal,' reporting on the case of an unvaccinated merchant seaman, aged 38, who developed .the disease while his ship was homeward bound. Two days after the disease was identified the" man was admitted to hospital in Glasgow, and! next day penicillin injections were begun. Seven days afterwards the seaman was convalescent, and when discharged from hospital 25 days after admission there was every promise of the pitting being only minimum.
