SEVENTH ARMY ENTERS NAZI BIRTHPLACE PATTON MEETIMGfTrST ORGANISED RESISTANCE (Rec. 12.20 p.m.) LONDON, April 29. Munich may already have surrendered to General Patch's tanks and infantry, which entered the city late in the afternoon, but communications are difficult and prevented confirmation of the report that it is in American hands, says Reuter's correspondent with the Seventh Army. Latest reports suggest that the city was not defended. General Patton's columns along the 80-mile Danube front are meeting the first organised resistance since t the Rhine crossing, but the advance toward the southern redoubt goes on relentlessly, savs Reuter's correspondent with the Third Army. It looks as though the Germans had halted their headlong flight through Bavaria and had decided to give battle on the approaches to the mountains. One thousand Germans, using 100 machine guns, fought bitterly in the defence of Cheb airfield, inside Czecho-S!ovakia. 11 miles south-east of As. What is left of the German army m the south is retreating through the Vorarlberg region toward Innsbruck, says the British United Press Zurich correspondent. Chaotic conditions oxist in Vorarlberg, where Bregenz, Dornbirn, Eeldkirch, and other towns have already appointed "peace-time mayors, who, however, are uncertain whether the Nazis intend to fight in their area or retreat farther eastward into the Salzburg redoubt. _ 1 The Times' correspondent in Bavaria savs German resistance may weil. tail off 'into pockets which will hold out for varying periods. A natural site for one such pocket is the mountainous region of Southern Germany, the western tip of Austria, and part of Northern Italy. The fact that this area, which includes Berchtesgaden, is perfectlv suited for defence no doubt accounts for the legend that it is a- national redoubt, but so far there is no sign of a mass withdrawal into this area. German troops are too busily engaged elsewhere, and their lack of rolling stock precludes big troop movements
