ESCAPE OF PRISONERS
MAORIS SOON RECAPTURED
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, April 26. Two Maoris who escaped on Tuesday night from the vicinity of the police lock-up at Kaikohe, where they had been held on charges of breaking, entering, and theft, experienced only u brief period of liberty. One. Peter Rameka, aged 21. a labourer, was recaptured near Henderson last night, and the other, Pere Ngatai, was arrested in the bar of an hotel this afternoon. .
The men left the lock-up at Kaikohe under poli"(> escort about 9 o'clock on Tuesday night for a few minutes' fresh air. but as soon as they were out in the open they dashed away across a paddock. When the police stopped a motor car at Henderson on Wednesday night the two men jumped out and ran. The police followed and later caught Rameka. He was charged with being an incorrigible rogue in that he escaped from the Kaikohe police gaol, and was remanded.
This afternoon the police went to an hotel in Newton, where they arrested Ngatai. ■
