PRISONERS OF WAR

NO DEDUCTIONS FROM PAY " In accordance with the decision of the New Zealand Government the pay ledger accounts of New Zealand prisoners of. war are not debited with advances made by the detaining Powers," states a letter from headquarters of the U.S.A. at Wellington in response to enquiries by the Dunedin association.

" The whole financial treatment of ex-prisoners of war by the New Zealand GoA-ernnient," continues the letter, " is so generous that it has been decided that no allowance, termed a ration allowance, shall be payable to a prisoner who escaped from a prisoner of war camp. The only exception in this rule is in the case of personnel who escaped following the Greece and Crete campaigns. They receive an allowance of Is Cd a day for the period of liberty prior to April 15, 1942. This provision is retained because it was brought into operation by the Imperial authorities in the Middle East, but you will observe that the period is limited."
