APPOINTMENT OF VICE-CHANCELLOR DEFERRED
The monthly meeting of the Otago University Council was held on Tuesday and was attended by the Chancellor (the Very Rev. D. C. Herrou), Miss M. W. May, the Hon. \V. Dowme Stewart, Drs C E. Hercus and F. G.. Soper, Messrs W. R. Brugh, H. P. Kidson, A. Steel, E. Partridge, James Wallace, and G. R. Ritchie. Dr CM. Foeken was appointed examinations organiser and D* G. C. Billing chief supervisor. . It was d ec 'ided to hold a refresher course in chemistry, the course to be a post-graduate one of 10 lectures. Approval was given to the holding of a students' thanksgiving service in the Concert Chamber on the afternoon after the declaration of Armistice Day.
The following chairmen of committees were appointed:—Finance, Mr James Wallace; Medical, Mr J. C H. Somerville; Home Science and Hostels, Mr E. Partridge. , Dr Soper and Mr Partridge were appointed to meet representatives of the Dunedin Manufacturers' Association and the Technical College Board, with a view to having suitable classes in science, especially, chemistry, arranged in the evenings. The Students' Association was congratulated on the success of the welcome to new students at the beginning of the session and on the high tone, of the proceedings. ■ Approval was given to a proposal to. make an additional sum of £7OO available for adult education. A sub-com-mittee was instructed to call applications for an additional tutorship and report to the next meeting of the council, i
The recentlv appointed director of the School of Mines (Dr G. Williams) advised by cable that he was still delayed in South Africa, but he had been assured of a passage by the first ship to New Zealand. . '.
Thanks were extended to Mr S. N V. Johnston for the gift to the Museum of a valuable Maori collection and to Mr Willi Fels for cataloguing the coin and medal collections.
OFFICE OF PRO-CHANCELLOR. Dr Soper moved that when the new office of Vice-Chancellor for a full-time academic head was created, the title of the person holding the office of deputy to the Chancellor should-.be changed to Pro-Chancellor. 'He said it had already been agreed to make provision for a full-time academic head, and the motion was merely designed to implement the scheme. The solicitors should be .instructed to make proper provision for the change in the amending Act now in preparation. The motion was carried.
The appointment of Vice-Chancellor to fill the vacancy created by the election of Mr Herron to the position of Chancellor was held over for one month; COURSE IN GEffGRAPHY,. A committee consisting of the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Dr Soper, and Mr.Kidson was set up to confer with the Professorial Board about accommodation for the proposed classes in geography. STUDENTS' LODGINGS. A report on lodgings preparoll by Mrs R. Calvert was forwarded by the Professorial Board.-; She recommended that a large block .he bought near,the University for houses and flats, using existing buildings where possible. Houses could be used for groups of •20 to 30 students, and flats for approved groups of students and lharried students. A cafeteria, club room, and other amenities could be provided which could be conducted by the students. It was decided to forward the suggestions to the Rev. H.' W. Turner for a report ' AWARDS. The following awards wore made: Fowler Scholarships.—C B. Oxncr autl W. J. Pryor. On the recommendation of the Professorial Board diplomas in home science were awarded to the following: —Misses E. M.
