ONE OF THE GREAT

GENUINE MOURNING FOR LOSS (Rec. 11,30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Oct, S. . Mr T. E. Dewey, Republican candidate for the Presidency, said Mr Willkie was one of the great men of our time. His death will be mourned throughout the world. A forceful, courageous man, he had made a notable contribution to political and philosophical discussions in critical years. Mr Cordell Hull, telegraphing Mrs Willkie. said Mr Willkie was a man of the- finest character, who_ staunchly and sincerely held his principles. His able and forthright presentation of his views on public questions was a great stiiaulus to forming public opinion. _ The Associated Press says Mr Willkie was inactive for the most part in the presidential campaign siuce stepping out of the race for Republican nomination. After his defeat at Wisconsiu Primary in last April he _ kept Democrats and Republicans alike guessing and never publicly disclosed which presidential candidate he planned to support, if either. Instead, he embarked on an avowed campaign to force President Roosevelt and Mr Dewey as far out into the open as possible on domestic and foreign policies. As a strong internationalist he wanted to see what each had to say upon what he considered fundamental issues. In his last published article Mr Willkie said the platforms of both parties were tragically inadequate in their pledges to the nation's i 3.000.000 negroes.
