FIERCE BATTLE AT TORNIO (Rec. 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 6. The Germans, using tanks and artillery, are launching fierce attacks against the Finnish bridgehead at Tornio at the head of the Gulf of Bothnia. The Germans massed troops and material from other, parts of the Finnish front to blast the Finns from their bridgehead. The Finns so far have managed to hold on, but their position is regarded in Helsinki as critical, says the British United Press Stockholm "correspondent._ A German landing on a small island in the Tornio Estuary forced the Finnish garrison to land in Sweden.
