A decision to take a referendum on the question of the establishment ot hotels in the suburbs, a hotly debated subject in lnvercargill at present, was made at a special meeting of the City Council this afternoon. The referendum will be taken on May 27, the date ol the local body election. The council reached its decision after hearing a deputation from the committee set up at the meeting on Tuesday to prepare a case against Tiaving lioteis in the suburbs. The deputation offered to meet the cost of taking a referendum if the council granted its request. Cr W. H. Boyes" said that as a member of the trust he would welcome a referendum. It would take the responsibility off the trust. Cr 'G. B. Orbell said he had voted against liquor in the suburbs, but he and Cr Boyes were over-ruled. The trust had been far from unanimous on this question, he s»id. He and Cr Boyes were not in favour of it, but unfortunately they were over-ruled. The town clerk, Mr W. F. Sttirman, said that the referendum would hove no legal effect. It could simply be used as evidence in' the Supreme Court.
