THUNDERING DISCHARGES
TURBULENT MEXICAN VOLGANO NEW YORK, May 9. The turbulent Parucutin volcano in Mexico has entered a new phase of activity. It is emitting thundering discharges, lighting the countryside for miles around. The emission of ashes has decreased the flow of lava, which lias reached the outskirts of the village of Paragaricutiro. [Parucutin came into the news with startling suddenness when it was born in February of last year. The volcano's birth was'preceded by violent_ earthquakes in the Parucutin district. A peon was tilling the flat land of his farm when he realised the ground was becoming very heated. Without warning, just ahead of him, the ground started emitting steam and smoke. He succeeded in getting away before there came a tremendous explosion, and Parucutin volcano sprang into_ life. The volcano has continued in activity since then, and thousands of square miles of countryside have been devastated. In the months since it erupted from flat ground the volcano has built for itself a cone standing 1,500 ft high. The volcano was born in a sparsely-populated area, and despite widespread devastation there was no loss of life.]
