TRIPLE THRUST
ALLIES PUSH INTO MOUNTAINS ADVANCE OH ITALIAN ADRIATIC COAST (Rec. 11.25 a.,m.) LONDON, May 10. Allied troops are pushing forward across the slopes of the Apennines close behind the retreating German Tenth Army, .and are making new advances around Monte Maiella, says Reuter's correspondent at Allied headquarters in Italy. The Allies since the beginning of the advance last Saturday, occupied 50 square miles of mountain country, including a number of important heights. In addition to occupying Palena, "they took possession of the town of Gamherale and the village of Fallascosa. They also occupied a number of high points between Palena and San Angelo. The Allies are making a triple thrust into the mountain sector only a few miles east of FieldMarshal von Kesselring's main supply route through Sulmona. Thfl German withdrawal is believed to have been forced upon them by the Allied successes in recent weeks.
The correspondent says the latest front-line despatches report that thfl Germans are still falling back. Enemy movements have .been observed south of tho Allied advance and west of the Sulmona-Castel di Sangro highway. Allied artillery began to act as soon as the movements were discovered.
Enemy mortars have been active north-west of Cassino, causing Allied Enemy patrols in the 'Adriatic sector are 'probing the area two miles east of Tollo, where the Germans were forced to withdraw after a clash in ■which they suffered casualties. Artillery has been active on the Garigliano and Anzio beachhead sectors.
