RATIONING EFFECTS DEMAND BEEF AND MUTTC'H CHEAPER At the Burnside stock sale to-day the entries were small in numbers compared with recent sales. Fat cattle numbered 230, being mostly average sorts, with a few pens of heavy cattle. In view of meat rationing the .market was somewhat- unsteady, butchers apparently being unable to judge their requirements. The market -was easier all over, heavy cattle being oheaiper by £3 a head, and evidently they wero not wanted by-the trade. Other sorts were easier bv 25s to 30s a head. Cows and heifers did not suffer to the same extent, and were easier by 10s to £1 a head. Quotations: —Prime heavy bullocks, to £l6 17s 6d; prime, £l4 2s 6d to £ls 17s 6d; medium, £lO 2s 6d to £ll 17s 6d; light £8 2s 6d to £9 2s 6d; prime heifers £9 17s 6(1 to £l2 2s Gd; medium, £7 17s 6d to £8 17s 6d; light, from £6 12s Sd; prime heavy cows, to £l-1: prime, ,£9 2s 6d to £lO 7s 6d; medium, £6 12s 6d to £7 12s 6d; light, from £5. 7k Gd In the fat sheep section the entry was a large one, made up. mostly of nondescript ewes with only a very few pens of good quality. Considering the quality, the market was a fair one, but prices were easier by 2s a head on last week. Quotations:—-Prime wethers, 27s 6d to 31s; medium, 24s to 265; light. 19s to 21s 6d; prime ewes. 18s 9d to 20s 9d; medium, 15s 6d to 16s 6d: light, lis to 13s. There was a medium entry of about l, 1 200 fat lambs. With the exception.of a few pens the quality was ordinary. The demand from tho trade was .easier, and. the ..market was barely up to last week. Freezing weights sold at schedule rates. Quotations :—Best quality lambs, to 31s 6d; prime, 28s to 30s; medium, 24s 6d to 25s 9d; light, to 22s 6d. In the store cattle there were a few pens of steers 2J- to 3£ years old. The inquiry was only fair, They averaged from £7 to £9. Vealers were fewei than last week, and prices were linn. Best vealers made from £i 15s to £5 17s; medium, £S 5s to £3 10s. Baconers were forward in average numbers, including a number of choice quality. The sale was firm and late values were well maintained. Best baconers made up to £7 17s; prime, £6 to £6 15s; medium, £5 to £5 8s; light, from £4 15s.
