ADVANCING EASTWARD

ALLIES MAKING FOR GERMAN ESCAPE ROAD LONDON, January 25. The main body of the Allied landing force in the Anzio-Nettuno area is advancing eastward toward the Lepini Range, 20 miles away, says the Algiers correspondent of the ' Daily Telegraph.' The range, which is a series of rugged peaks more than 3,000 ft high, is on the other side of the Appian Way. ' The Allies are obviously aiming to cut the main Rome-Cassino road, which is dominated on the western side by the range. This road is the main escape route north for the German forces on the Garigliano front, 70 miles to the south.

Delayed despatches now reveal that the Germans counter-attacked strongly soon after the initial 1 andings, and recaptured two important bridges across a canal. The Allied bridgehead was penetrated to a depth of a mile by enemy tanks,, which continued to advance until anti-tank guns were rushed up to deal with them. Warships off the coast also joined in to repel the enemy attacks.
