FREEZING WORKS IDLE

CHAIN DISPUTE (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 26. Thomas Borthwick and Sons' freezing works flt Belfast were idle this morning owing to the men refusing a request by the company for an increase in the number of men on the chains.

Negotiations over the dispute were opened yesterday afternoon, when the district man power officer (Mr M. Ross) and the inspector of awards (Mr S. E. McGregor) met both the management and men. No agreement was reached, and when the men.were informed of the company's decision this morning they refused to man the works. ■

The company wishes to place 35 men on each chain but the men demanded 35 men on one chain anil 30 on the other.
