MINERS ON STRIKE
DISSATISFIED WITH AWARD Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, Jan. 24. More than 1,400 mine workers are already idle as a result of dissatisfaction with the new wage award which increased the national minimum for underground workers from £4 3s to £5 a week, and surface workers from £3 18s to £4 10s. The men claimed £6 a week for underground workers and £5 10s for surface workers. The ' Daily Telegraph 'says the contention of the strikers appears to be that the award does not benefit the higher-paid workers, who are already receiving more, and the other workers receive only small advances. The award stipulates that ' any agreement under which workers receive more than the new rates must remain in force. The national conference of miners is being held in London on Thursday. The ' Telegraph ' says the miners' leaders will certainly condemn the strike.
