Wider use by the Church of England of deaconesses for reading morning and evening prayer and in special cases for administering the Chalice is advocated by the Church Committee on Women s Work. The committee suggests the minimum age for deaconesses should be 24 years instead of 30 as at present, j and tihe view that'deaconnesses. cannot J marry without repudiating their voca- j tion should be specifically disavowed, j The committee adds that the Church stands to gain by the marriage of some of its trained workers. The shortage of men clergy leads the committee to the conclusion that "the outlook is bleak " unless* well-qualified women are appointed to positions of responsibility. Improved pay and pensions are recommended by the committee., which also condemns the present deaconnewses' dress.
