UTILITY POULTRY CLUB
POST-MORTEM EXAMINATIONS Post mortem examinations of two fowls procured for that purpose were heJd by the Government poultry instructor (Mr W. L. Jourciain) at a meeting of the Dunedin Utility Poultry Club on Monday evening. The. first bud to be examined was a Ban-fid Rock. This, fowl had never laid an egg but it was a healthy-looking specimen. When opened, it disclosed ovarian disorders. An egg had been broken inside the bird, but bad remained there, blocking the passage of further eggs. Th<> bird would have been a victim of peritonitis if it had been allowed to live. The' second bird, a White Leghorn, was suffering from tuberculosis in the intestines, and Mr Jourdain said it was the most advanced case of this type he had ever seen. Tuberculosis spots on the liver could be distinguished bv attempting to lift the small white spot's off with a sharp knife. If they were easily removed they would be indications of tuberculosis.
At the February mooting Mr J. Hamilton will speak on the White Leghorn breeds.
