METHODS OF RAISING MONEY
VARIOUS SCHEMES OISCUSSED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. .23. Various suggestions for. the raising of patriotic lunus were considered by the Dominion patriotic conference to-day after they had been examined by a subcommittee.
It was announced that the Lady Newall New Zealand gift book, containing contributions from leading NewZealand writers, was about to be published, and the proceeds would be devoted to the patriotic funds. It was decided to refer to the provincial councils for their consideration the special street system of raising funds used in Australia, of which had been received from the New Zealand High Commissioner at Canberra. Mr C A. Berendsen. The subcommittee stated that in its opinion the scheme was a good one. The view was taken that the difficulty of operating a proposed household collection box scheme on a national basis was too great. It was decided, however, to refer the proposal to the provincial councils for independent action.
It was announced that a special film production, 'For Ever and a Day.' would be screened throughout New Zealand, 35 peri cent, of the film hire being available for patriotic funds. No action was taken in regard to the proposal for an additional tax of 5 per cent, on totalisator investments.
A recommendation by the sub-com-mittee that the Government be asked to approve a £IO,OOO patriotic art union was adopted. Other recommendations approved were that the Government be approached to grant each patriotic district an extra race day a year in aid of patriotic funds, and that the Government be asked to reconsidjr its decision prohibiting the broadcasting of names of doiiors and their subscriptions in radio-telephone or similar appeals. It was also recommended that a letter be forwarded to the picture industry by the Patriotic Fund Board asking for its co-operation in a special patriotic effort for 1944. The sub-com-mittee stated that it was unable to recommend a "Miss New Zealand" contest on a national basis.
A high tribute to the efficiency, tact, and courtesy displayed by Mr G. A. Hayden in discharging his important responsibilities as secretary and treasurer of the National Patriotic Fund Board was paid at the conference. The delegates from the provincial patriotic councils without exception were unanimous in expressing their appreciation of Mr Hayden's services and the assistance he had given to provincial councils and the patriotic movement generally throughout the Dominion.
