STATEMENT BY MR STIMSON
(Kee. 12.15. p.m.) WASHINGTON. November 20. The War Department has requested General Eisenhower to furnish a full report on the General Patton slapping incident, said Mr Stimson. in addressing a Press conference. He explained that since the beginning of'the war he and General Marshall had adopted the principle of selecting a possible theatre commander and then giving him a free hand, with complete authority. Under this principle General Eisenhower was responsible for all matters of administration and discipline within his theatre. Mr Stimson said the War Department disapproved of the statement issued bv Allied headquarters denying that General Patton had been reprimanded and implying that the day before the reporters were permitted to publish the story that the report of the incident was erroneous. He added that obviously General* Eisenhower had not approved of the denial, since it was promptly disapproved by his headuuarters.
