Considerable damage was done tn the submarine base at Toulon by the Fortresses, and hits were scored on repait shops and submarine pens, as well as the harbour, where ships were anchored. Oil fires were started in repair shops, and other fires, surmounted by clouds of thick, black, smoke, were seen. Three heavy explosions in the arsenai area nern reported. One of the ships hit in the harbour is believed to be a naval unit. An explosion was seen on another vessel. Three submarines and merchantmen in dry dock were probably hit. The raid was apparently a surprise, and only a few fighters were sent up, none of which gave battle. Other targets in" France included a viaduct on the°Riviera near Cannes. Cloud prevented the Liberator crews observing results at the Sofia railway yards. There was a sharp encount.ei between a dozen enemy fighters and the Liberators and Lightnings, in which three enemy planes were destroyed.
