Howling. —Fine weather prevailed for the opening of Kaitungata and Alilton Bowling Clubs on Saturday afternoon. There were good attendances at both greeny, and enjoyable'play was indulged in. Cricket. l —After a lapse of two or three years, cricket made its ro-appear- • anc;e in Balclutha on Saturday, when teams from the South Otago freezing works and Finegand linen flax mill tried conclusions. There was a fair attendance of spectators, and some interesting play was seen. The flaxmillers batted first and compiled 80 runs, C. Melviu being top scorer with 27 runs. G. Pope (22) and G. Hutton (16) also batted well. Barron, Hurring, and Burns divided bowling honours. Freezer had knocked up 73 when rain stopped play. Two men were still batting and one had still to bat. T. Davey topped the score with 21 (including two (i's and a 4'). Ryder, Hill, and Tosh were the most successful bowlers. As a result of this game it is likely that a series of unofficial matches will be arranged between Benhar (lottery works, Tapanui, Clydevale, and Finegand linen flax mills and the freezing works.
Rifle Shooting.—Balclutha 'Miniature 'Ride Club brought the season to a close last week, when the president, Mr J. Barclay, presented the trophies won during' the season, as follows: —Men's A grade championship, J. K. Lowe; 15 grade championship (Chalmers Cup), G. Tosh; A grade aggregate ("Wilson Elliott Cup), R. Anderson; B grade aggregate (Falconer Cup), J. Stiven; C grade championship, C. Mngnire; aggregate (Macdonald Cup), 11. Williamson; ladies' A grade championship, Mrs J. T. Armstrong; aggregate, Mrs Watson; B grade championship (Sinclair Cup), Mrs Thurlow; aggregate, Miss Laing; handicap aggregate (Mrs Watson's cup), Miss C. Arbuthnott. The South Otago Association's championship meeting will be held on the Balclutha range on November C. Scottish Society.—There was a splendid attendance iit the 'Bruce Scottish Society's monthly social last week Chief A. McLeod presiding. Members stood in memory of Miss Gardyne, a. foundation member, whose death took place recently. Reference was made to the coming departure of Chief McLeod, who is going to New Plymouth, and best wishes were extended for hi*, future welfare. The programme was most entertaining, those contributing, being the Ladies' Choir, Misses P. Maxwell, L. Keinan, W T . Crawford. A. Beck (Christchurch), Tremonger, Mr . W. Smith (songs), Miss P. Campbell (recitations), Mr C. McGrouther (bagpipe selection). Miss D. Carmody (Highland dance). Mrs Keach and Miss Fiddes and Misses Keinan and Crawford (duets), Mr S. Begg (cornet solos). Miss J. McLean (piano solo). Personal. —Additional Balclutha men who were the recipients of presentations prior to returning to camp last week were N. Mitchell, G. Cunningham, and D. Willyams.
