NEWS AND VIEWS

Handicaps for the New Zealand Cup are due to-morrow morning. The final acceptance for the New Zealand Trottiig Cup closes on Thursday at 5 p.m. Tho Rules of Racing, with all amendments to date, have recently been reprinted. A copy is acknowledged with thanks. Bashful Lady was not seen at her best at G-ore yesterday, as she was suffering from a seasonal complaint.

After the third race at Gore yesterday backers of first favourites had a bad time, as five of them, I'latform, Salmi, Hearth, I'm Sure and Fair Trial, let them down badly.

Countless gained many friends' for the New Zealand Trotting Cup yesterday by his bulldog finish in the Hannou Memorial Handicap. Haughty, on the other hand, gave a poor display. The attendance at Gore yesterday easily constituted a record for tho club, and caught the management napping in the supply of race cards and gate admission tickets, both being sold out before the meeting commenced. When Warfield won the concluding event, at Oamaru yesterday he returned a dividend approaching a third of a century. The last time Warfield won, on January 2, at Addington. he returned another out-sized dividend.

Royal Lancer, who was ridden in yesterday's engagement by a stable apprentice, looked fresh and sound, when he paraded for the mile and u-quarier race. He was not knocked about, but the race should do him good for his New Zealand Cup engagement.

A. E. Didham very nearly pulled off a good double with Atrcus and Monetary at Gore veslerdav for Mr W A White, a steward 'of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Both horses were only beaten by narrow margins, and showed they are not far off being back to their best form.

Another illustration or the time it takes to make a hurdler is provided by Treasurer. As n Winter Cup winner, there has never been any doubt regarding his pace, and from just after Easter H. Nurse has been educating him as a jumper. In his last three starts he has run second at Geraldine and won at Washdyke and Trenthani. and is now qualified to take his place with the best in the country. The success of Silver Lily at- Trentham on Saturday was a fitting reward for the patience her owner-trainer has shown with this mare. As a two-year-old she was _ a particularly brilliant filly, and after winning the McLean Stakes a very bright future was predicted for this Paper Money —Bonnie Lake mare. She ran second in the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton the following month, but that was the last_ occasion she finished in the money until she ran second at Washdyke last Saturday week. She was given a lengthy spell after losing form as a two-year-old, and since her return to the tracks has proved difficult to train. D. J. McDonald deserves

all the luck with this marc, and has never lost confidence that he would bring ber back to her two-year-old form. Platform had every chance in the big handicap at Gore, for which he was strongly fancied by his connections. With half a mile to go he was well placed, but failed to.show his usual brilliancy in the final run. It was not a good New Zealand Cup trial. , , Macedoine returned nearly a double-figure dividend when she won the principal race at Gore yesterday. This was no doubt due to the reports that she was suffering from e cold. Her performance was a good one, and points to her chance in the New Zealand Cup. When Thumbs Up won at Oamaru yesterdav he presented his owner (who celebrated his sixtv-third birthday) with a nice birthday gift. *Mr E. J. August purchased Thumbs Up for £2OO just after the Geraldiuo meeting, and yesterday won a £250 stake with him. , But the best part of the birthday present was a dividend of over a score, of which the owner had £25 worth.

Tara King, winner of the Wellington Guineas on Saturday, is a colt by Beau Pere from Zarene. It was his fourth start this season, his only other placing being at Masterton last Saturday week when he was beaten only by a short head over seven furlongs by Te Awe Awe. Tara King is trained by P. Burgess and Te Awe Awe by B. Burgess. Glenfalloch, winner . of the Wellington Handicap on Saturday, is a four-year-old colt by Kincardine (the sire of Kindergarten) from Memron. He commenced this season by getting up in the last stride to beat Aqueduct over a mile and a-quarter at Hastings early this month, and then won over the same distance al Masterton last .Saturday week. His win al Trail ham was the third in as many starts this season.
