NOTES ON THE MEETING. [By St. Clair.J Despite a dull morning, the special train from Dunedin to Gore was crowded to standing room and helped to make a record attendance at tho meeting; the gate receipts totalling £922 3s 9d, as compared with £483 10s last year. The, track was iu good order and improving under tho effects of the drying wind as Hie day advanced. The racing was clean and interesting, but spoiled somewhat by the bad starting, particularly in the four races over tho shorter courses. Arabian Night was nearly £7O better fancied than Steward for the Pukerau High-weight Handicap but both ran badly. Lady Don, despite her 11.0, was out m front all the way, and just lasted long enough to win by a short half-length. The judge placed Kohara, Silver Mask, and Gnohill next, in that order. There were certainly only heads between them, but there was a general opinion among those in good line to judge that Kohara was fourth, and not second. On reports of good private gallops Girl Friend, a daughter of that brilliant marc Gold Boa, was backed down to odds-on prices for the Novice Handicap, and she gave her backers little anxiety. The start was a very bad one, Young Bob and Filibuster getting the best of it, but at the end of two furlongs the favourite and Bonnie Chela headed them off, and Girl Friend, taking charge at the home turn, , won comfortably by half, a length from Bonnie Chela, with Green Note, and Filibuster handy next. The heavy wagering on the Balfour Harness Handicap was confined to Liberty Bond, who was about £2OO better fancied than Loyal Peter, and though both met with trouble they had no difficulty in finishing well clear of the others, and 'in' tho order a%, backed. The favourite lost about five seconds at the start, and Trevathan showed the way to Loyal Peter, and Liberty Bond ran into second place at the end of six furlongs. Heading this pair off at the home turn, the favourite scored easily by five lengths, and Trevathan was another five lengths away third. Platform was backed down to short prices for the President's Handicap, being over £SOO better fancied than Minority, but the former shaped badly. Atreus, Southern Sail, and Nightcalm were the early leaders, but after three furlongs had "been covered Atreus was taken to the front and raced along the back three lengths clear of Nightcalm, with Southern Sail at tho head of the others. After rounding the far turn Macedoine and Minority moved up, but Atreus was still clear turning into the straight. Inside the distance Macedoine made a good challenge, and just reached Atreus to beat him by a head. Minority was four lengths away third, and there was daylight to both Platform and Bashful Lady, who were next. For the Waimea Hack Handicap Salmi was made an odds-on chance, nearly £6OO better fancied than Royal Brief. The start was one of tue worst over seen\ on the course, Dark Colleen and the. favourite-get-ting much the best of it. After rounding the far turn Salmi took charge and led inlo the straight from Filibeg and Sister Sal. At the distance Sister Sal challenged and beat the favourite home by a head. Filibeg was four lengths away third and Maiden's Money next. Hearth was nearly £4OO better fancied than Gold Flight in the Stewards' Handicap, which was another contest spoiled by a bad start, the favourite being one of those hopelessly left. Fleet Street, racing in the club's colours, slipped the field at the start, and just hung on long enough to hold off a good challenge by Monetary and beat him by a short neck. Gold Flight, who had : every chance, was two lengths further back third, well clear of Dark Olga. Another of J. Walsh's team in I'm Sure was mad" a hot favourite for the Otama Harness Handicap, being nearly £450 better fancied than Poppotunoa. Beginning smartly, I'm Sure was always in the front division, and when the field turned for home was just in front of Night Nurse, Fancy Goods, Indian Wrack, and Poppotunoa, the last-named pocketed next the rails. Once in the run home he got clear, and finishing very fast won by a narrow margin from Indian Wrack, with I'm Sure a length off third, just in front of Fancy Goods.. .. , ,

In a record pool for the course, £6,985, on the Farewell Hack Handicap, Fair Trial was about £450 better fancied than First In. The start was a very bad one, only Coy and Gnohill getting out well, Southern Wave, Cerne Minster, and Pink Dart being left standing. Gnohill led along the back from Radiant Morn, Coy, and First In, but before reaching the far turn First In had taken charge and drew right away to win by four lengths from Sascha, with Steward and Gnohill next.
